Lawmakers describe Nepal Police investigation into Chandrauta woman’s rape as ‘incomplete’

Nepal Police said on Friday it found involvement of two police officers in the rape of a verbally-challenged woman (35) in Chandrauta, Kapilvastu, about a month ago. Inspector General of Police told the Parliament’s Social Justice and Human Rights Committee: Available evidence points at the involvement of only two officers in the rape. At the meeting, committee members said at least 10 police personnel from the Armed Police Force’s Chandrauta-based Bindhyabasini Battalion were involved in the crime and they had urged police to bring all of them to justice. They said IGP Aryal has no right to blame anyone without clinching proof. Aryal said the investigation faced difficulties also because of the woman’s inability to speak. Personnel from the battalion had allegedly raped the woman when she had gone to graze her buffaloes at Jawai Stream in Chandrauta. Police have arrested Assistant Constable Raju Tharu and APF Jawan Lok Raj Awasthi on the charge of involvement in the crime. Awasthi has

Teen Ghumti’ movie review: A sincere adaptation of Koirala’s novel

I would not be saying anything new when I say literature and cinema are two different disciplines, and that each demands a completely different understanding of the respective form. Based on BP Koirala’s novel of the same name, director Bikash Dhakal’s Teen Ghumti, which opened in theaters last week, is bound to draw many comparisons with that of the litterateur politician. Cinema has always been considered a ‘lesser’ medium compared to literature. Perhaps, it is because books and essays are mainly written for a discerning audience. They first guide the imagination of the reader with the beauty and economy of prose and then open them self up to interpretation–unlike films. A film is mainly visual, and it has a more definite form which makes it more accessible. As is the case with Teen Ghumti, and many other films, movies however constantly feed (many times, assault) visual information to the audience, without ever guiding their mindfulness. What we are told in a certain scene of a film

Solution to Nepal’s political standoff lies in Kathmandu, not in New Delhi: BJP leader Vijay Jolly

Kathmandu, July 8 Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vijay Jolly said on Friday that solution to Nepal’s political standoff lies in Kathmandu and not in New Delhi. Speaking at a face-to-face that Reporters’ Club Nepal had organised, Jolly said: It is Nepalis, who wrote Nepal’s constitution. And those obstructing the implementation of the charter are also Nepali citizens. The supply of essentials to Nepal came to a halt because Madheshis staged sit-in on border points, Jolly said, adding: It’s wrong to say India has a role in Nepal’s movement on this ground. The solution to the standoff should be searched in Kathmandu, not in Delhi, he said. The leader claimed that there’s no standoff between Nepal and India at political and diplomatic levels.  He described remarks coming from Nepal’s political parties that India wants to cause Nepal’s disintegration as illusory. He said: There’s a need to reject such remarks. India wants a stable, strong, self-reliant, progressive and peaceful Nepal, he sai

Yarsa pickers return empty-handed from Manang

MANANG:  Most of the yarsagumba pickers in the district have returned home empty-handed this season, thanks to the scarcity of precious larva-fungus combination in the Himalayan meadows. Yarsagumba, the caterpillar fungus ( Cordyceps sinensis ), is also known as Himalayan Viagra for its apparent medicinal and aphrodisiac properties. As it fetches fortune in national and international market, people, especially the rural poor from different districts, venture out into the challenging Himalayan meadows to manually dig out the prized parasitic fungus. A group of 25 people from Dhading district had made it to Bhraka of Manang to chance their luck, but failed to collect enough yarsa to make them rich. Since the region did not witness any snowfall last winter, according to locals, yarsagumba had been a rare sight this season. Last year, Kai Bahadur Tamang and his wife from Dhading had sold yarsagumba that they collected at Rs 200 to Rs 750 apiece last year.  They, however, had

Marijuana cultivation, which is rampant in other parts o

Govt fails to enforce plastic ban

Although the authorities had imposed a ban on plastic bags below 40 microns effective from April 14, 2015, Valley denizens and shopkeepers continue using the easily available plastic bags. Plastic manufacturers said they were compelled to manufacture plastic bags for their sustenance. “Plastic factories have been manufacturing plastic bags in spite of the ban to recoup their investments,” said Sharad Sharma, chair of Nepal Plastic Manufacturers’ Association, adding, “The government should have offered alternatives to plastic bags before imposing the ban.” The association had strongly protested the government’s move to ban plastic bags and had demanded that the decision be revoked. According to the association, at least 140 out of 200 existing plastic bag factories had to be shut down after the ban. “The daily demand for plastic bags in the Valley is around 7 metric tonnes, and despite the ban, the demands are being met through secretive production or imports,” Sharma said, a

I came here to make an impact, but Nepal made an impact on me: ‘Burning Man’ sculptor David Bes

David Best is an internationally renowned American sculptor. He is known for building immense temples out of recycled wood sheets (discarded while making toys and other punch-outs) for the Burning Man festivals, where they are then burnt to the ground. Best is in Kathmandu to take part in the World Wood Day celebrations being organised by the International Wood Culture Society in association with IUCN and the Nepal Government. He is collaborating with local artisans in Bungmati to build a wooden temple. Onlinekhabar caught up with Best during his visit to Bungmati recently. What is the Burning Man all about? When you ask a Hindu what Hinduism is about, he may say it’s about the million gods it has. But he won’t be able to tell you exactly what it is. In the same way, I can’t tell you what the Burning Man is about, although I have been going there for years. Even after 14 years, I  don’t understand it. What has your role been like in the Burning Man? We had a festival that had fire dept

Bajeko Sekuwa: Business, strategy, future explained in 8 questions

You might have seen this logo around town, and wondered what it was all about. Much has been written about how Bajeko Sekuwa had humble beginnings, and how it has evolved over the past decades. But this time we caught up with the CEO of Bajeko Ventures Pvt Ltd Sushil Khadka to ask him eight specific questions about Bajeko Sekuwa’s business plans. 1. Two years ago, you became the CEO of Bajeko Sekuwa, which was running as a family business for over four decades. How has the experience been like? First of all, let me get one thing cleared. I am the CEO of the parent company that owns the Bajeko Sekuwa brand, and one of its stakeholders; I am not an employee. Two years ago, when I was in Nepal ( I had come here on holiday from the US where I was studying), I met Chetan Bhndariji, the owner of Bajeko Sekuwa, at one of his outlets. During the course of a casual conversation, we talked about expanding the business as a franchise, and that got the ball rolling. Soon, I was back in Ne
